A Workshop on Linguistic Ethnography and Translanguaging

Zhu Hua& Li Wei

Birkbeck College,University of London, and UCL Institute of Education, University College London

The workshop is divided into two parts: the first part aims to give an introduction to Linguistic Ethnography, a methodology of investigating situated language use in everyday activity, and Translanguaging, a new theoretical concept for studying multilingual and multimodal communication. It starts by outlining what these methods and concepts are about and then examines the characteristics of the ethnographic approach, how to do ethnography, the advantages and possible problems of ethnographic research, and what the Translanguaging perspective adds to the linguistic ethnographic research and beyond.

In the second part, this workshopdemonstrates how Linguistic Ethnography and Translanguaging work, using examples from our four-month linguistic ethnographic investigations in a Polish shop in Newham, London, as the 1st phase of the larger AHRC project, Translation and translanguaging: Investigating linguistic and cultural transformations in superdiverse wards in four UK cities (TLANG).  The overall research objective is to understand language, business and cultural practices in a local business run by a multilingual, migrant family. In this presentation, we focus on the business of translanguaging and discuss the questions of what, how, when, and why, specifically:

  • What semiotic resources are (made) available and embodied?
  • How do individuals make use of them in creating meaning and effective communication in their everyday life?
  • When and why do individuals evoke the (imagined) boundaries between languages?

We will discuss the consequences of these multilingual practices in the context of connectivities and potentials of transnational experience. We will point out directions of future research.
